05/27/12 Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras
The Greater Bridgeport Youth Orchestras (GBYO) will perform the concluding concert of their 50th Anniversary year on Sunday, May 27 at 3:00 pm at Klein Auditorium in Bridgeport. The concert will include performances by all five GBYO ensembles.
Christopher Hisey, Music Director for the organization, will conduct the Principal Orchestra in Smetana’s The Moldau, the third movement of Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), and Sousa’s rousing Stars and Stripes Forever.. Sarah McDonald, the winner of this season’s annual GBYO student concerto competition, will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64. The Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Carrie Mascaro, will perform the Overture to L’Italiana in Alegri by Rossini, the third movement of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7, and Selections from “Chicago.” Jeff Albright will lead the Concert Orchestra in an all patriotic program including God Bless the U.S.A., Armed Forces Salute, America the Beautiful and National Emblem March. The String Orchestra, conducted by Erica Messina, will present Boots and Saddle by Keith Sharp, Sinfonia in F by Vivaldi and Synergy by Deborah Baker Monday. Aaron Barkon and the Wind Ensemble will present Simpsons, Perthshire Majesty by Samuel Hazo, Take the “A” Train and Trish Trash Polka by Johann Strauss.
Founded in 1961 the GBYO, with four developmentally sequential orchestras and the Wind Ensemble, offers one of the finest musical experiences for young musicians in the area. .The 240+ members in the five ensembles were chosen by competitive auditions in early fall. The members, in grades 4-12, reside in 26 communities in Fairfield and New Haven Counties. Information on auditions for the 2012-13 season can be found at www.gbyo.org/audition.htm
Tickets for the May 27 concert are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the Klein Auditorium after 2:00 pm on the day of performance or by contacting the GBYO Executive Director, Barbara Upton at 203-459-4249.
